Share and Voice: Health Care Commercial

Since I did my Advocacy project on health care, I thought this video was quite appropriate!   This video is cartoon and actually funny, but when you listen to the words they are really true.  It is sad that people are making videos like that about health care! It shouldn't be an option to make a commercials like that, because health care shouldn't be like this. Take a look!

Share and Voice: Environmental Cartoons

As I was looking at some comic strip cartoons today on the internet, I came across a website that had comic strips all related to the environment.  I started reading some of them and they were actually pretty good.  I just remember when I was younger and would always read take the comic strip section out of the newspaper.  Reading these comic strips just made me think that if these were put into all newspapers it would increase awareness about environmental issues in a fun way! Kids would be reading the comics for fun, but it would still be getting the message across!
This was my favorite comic:To view more click here.

Share and Voice: National Drinking Water Week

I just wanted to let everyone know that it is National Drinking Water Week from May 3rd-May 9th. This week is set aside to help educate people about the water cycle and how water can be contaminated. Here is an article that explains why drinking water can be a concern.  I'm sure that we all know many of the harmful elements that can be in our water and the harm they can do to us, but this just reiterates this and also shows some other toxins that I didn't know about.  I got this information from a website called Tox Town.  It is really cool, because you can click on different locations, such as farms, cities, and towns and see some of the health issues that go on in each area, or how these locations contribute to the harmful effects. It even talks about the Swine Flu, which is a hot topic as of right now!!

Hey..so I know that I already made a post about places going green, but I actually found this really cool youtube video about Target.  It tells the ways that Target is going green and then gives you a bunch of ways that you can help out while shopping at Target.  I personally LOVE Target and go there often so I thought that this video applied directly to me. Take a look

Share and Voice: Places Going Green

Ok, so I haven't done a share and voice since before spring break.  I kno..YIKES!!! I have been riding the struggle bus since then and just haven't found the time.  Finally, I am taking a day to do one though! I also noticed that since I waited so long Kathy already posted about our spring break trip and all of the things we found in Mexico and someone else did a post about how Wal-Mart is going green too, which I was gonna put in mine. I still have some other places that are going green and I thought they were pretty interesting.

First of all, I just became and LSBE student, so most of my classes are in the new Business building. I knew that they were doing thing's to go green, such as all the windows they have. They use natural sunlight instead of having lights on all day.  I know they have done many other things as well.  I didn't know that they had a plaque in the building though, so I took some pictures!

The second thing I wanted to make note of is the Aveda product line.  I am doing a hair show for Shear Katz and they use Aveda products.  On every stylists mirror they have little signs that are about going green..I didn't have a camera, so I couldn't take pictures.  They also have signs that tells about how Aveda uses natural materials in their products.  Nice to see big lines of hair products going green!

Here are my pictures of how Sun Country Airlines goes green!

Also I heard on the radio this morning that Wal-Mart is going green and you can help by buying products in packs of two rather than buying 2 seprate packs, because it saves on a ton of cardboard and other packaging material!

Share and Voice: Northland Country Club

HEY GUYS!!!

I work at Northland Country Club (NCC) here in Duluth. For those of you who don't know anything about it, it is a private country club where you have to have a membership to go there. We serve food there, we have a bar, and also a golf course. It is pretty expensive and the members want to have everything at their beck and call! I am a server there, and I love it! Anyways, about a week ago my boss and some members who are on the board had a meeting and when my boss came back from the meeting he was telling us some of the changes they are gonna make. The first thing out of his mouth was that this summer they were going to get bottled water for out on the golf course. I immediately interrupted him and told him how bad bottled water actually is for our environment, especially considering that NCC is trying to go "green" as much as possible! He didn't believe me at first until I started giving him statistics about how much emission one bottle produces and he was shocked! He actually ended up wanting me to make print outs of things we use at NCC and how much emissions they produce and how it effects our environment. He also now wants me to start attending the board meetings so I can have my input and help educate our board members on what is going on since they don't take the time to research it.

I have to say that this is probably one of my favorite classes and out of all my college classes that I have taken so far I know I will get the most out of this class. It is really nice to be able to take something that I have learned from a class and apply it in my everyday life. It is really interesting to me! I also think that this example just goes to show that even one person voicing their opinion actually can make a difference. I think that it is up to those of us that know what is going on to step in and try and help educate others on what we know, even if we aren't experts!

Share and Voice: Shutting Down For Earth Hour

I have been seeing commercials on TV for esurance and they have been talking about "Earth Hour." I looked up what it was all about and it is a really cool idea. There are 35 countries participating and on March 29th and 8:00 pm everyone is supposed to shut their lights off for 1 hour! It's supposed to prove the point that something really does need to be done for our environment!! I am challenging everyone to turn off the lights and every other electronic for one hour on March 29th! Below is the video from the commercial!

Share and Voice: Car That Runs On Water -Best Latest Invention 2008

I found this video on youtube while I was looking up automobile companies and what they are doing to go "green." I thought this one was really cool! I also think that this just goes to show that we definentely have the technology to better our earth by producing less gas emissions! A car that runs on water is amazing!! Although it is a really good idea and they say it doesn't really take that much water to make it run for quite some time, it could cause some problems considering that we already are having water shortages throughout the world. Watch the video and let me know what you think!

Share and Voice: Drinking Orange Juice Might Be Worse Than Bottled Water

Hey guys! So I found this really cool website that has a lot of really good articles about the environment. It is an entirely “Green” website! I was searching for articles and I found the one below really interesting, it caught my eye right away. I admit I drink bottled water, even though I know that it is bad for the environment from the production that goes into it. I didn’t realize it was this bad, and to find out that orange juice is even worse by quite a bit was shocking. I’m assuming that orange juice isn’t the only juice that is this bad either! I just thought maybe some of you would find it kind of interesting to realize that things we do everyday, such as drinking a glass of orange juice, can have such a big effect on our environment. If you multiply the 1.98 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per glass of orange juice it makes by the amt of people who drink at least 1 glass a day is just crazy to think about! Hope you like the article!

P.S. The website that I found is

Drinking Orange Juice Might be Worse than Bottled Water
How to pick out the greener beverages.
By Brian MerchantBrooklyn, NY, USA Thu Feb 05 10:00:00 EST 2009
Boris Grdanoski/AP
In a recent rumble match between bottled water and orange juice over at
TreeHugger, the beverage revealed to be the worst eco-offender surprised and upset lovers of classic breakfast drinks and screwdrivers everywhere. Yes, it turned out that while drinking bottled water is bad, but orange juice was even worse.

Bad News for Orange Juice Fans

Hit the link above for the full report, but the gist is this. Considering everything factors into the production of both drinks (bottle production, fertilizer, processing, transportation, etc), it was determined that every liter of Fiji water that makes it to your local convenience store creates a total of .55 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, while every liter of Tropicana orange juice you pour into your breakfast glass generates 1.98 pounds.
So what does this mean for those of us trying to minimize our
ecological footprints? It means it's time to start looking at orange juice in a whole new light.
In most parts of the world, it really should be considered a sort of luxury: as is pointed out in the piece, there's really no way to get orange juice without causing carbon chaos. Even fresh-squeezing is out, as the packaging is often more intensive for oranges than for orange juice.
So unless you're fresh squeezing local, organically (fertilizer-free) grown oranges, we have to accept the fact that OJ is tough on the environment. So what can we do?
Orange Juice Alternatives

We can look for OJ alternatives, of course. Anything that's mass-processed and fertilized is out, so check those drinks off your list—that's where most of the harmful emissions come from. Anything locally made and fertilizer-free are safe bets for low-emission drinks.
A good idea is to find out what grows locally in your area—fresh fruits and vegetables from your local farmers markets and CSA would make the ideal low-impact drink.
I doubt I'll be able to convince anyone to entirely give up orange juice, and maybe
giving up oj isn't so essential in the scheme of things anyway. But we do need to think about it—so when do pour yourself a glass, savor it. Just think of the emissions it cost to refresh you.
And next time you're in Florida, stock up on organically grown oranges.
